Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha has a long rich history of use in Classical Ayurveda from India for approximately 4,000 years. One of the most revered herbs in Ayurveda, it is considered a Rasayana and has been traditionally used to support health, energy, youthful vigor, and fertility.*
Ashwagandha is a Sanskrit word that roughly translates as that which gives the smell of a horse, inferring that it can help one perform with the strength of a horse. In modern herbalism, it is considered to be an adaptogen, a substance that facilitates the body's ability to respond to stress and balance body functions.*Â
Bacopa
Also known as Brahmi, this delicate, creeping, water loving annual has been utilized in classical Ayurveda for thousands of years as an herb to support memory and enhance the power of the mind. Although well known for its status as a “nootropic” herb which is a category of substances that can enhance memory and overall cerebral function; in some circles, Bacopa is also regarded as an adaptogenic herb with tonic effects on the mind and stress response.*
Ginger
Another versatile herb or spice that has been relied on for thousands of years in both Ayurveda and TCM. Ginger has a strong pungent and slightly sweet taste and contains many active compounds, namely pungent principals such as Gingerol and Shogal as well as volatile oils like Zingiberine and Zingerone.*
Turmeric
Turmeric rhizome, known by its vibrant yellow-orange hue,
has been used as a spice and herb and for over 4,000 years in India and tropical parts of Asia, which make it an integral part of both dietary and medical systems in classical Ayurveda. There have been over 5,000 papers written and published about this amazing plant, Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant and adaptogenic companion. It has been shown to support digestion, balance the body’s inflammatory response, and support the body in responding to stress by reducing cortisol and improving mood.*
Black Pepper
The spicy and pungent tasting Black Pepper fruit is another
botanical that is used both as a spice and an herb in classical Ayurveda even though in the West it is used almost exclusively as a culinary ingredient. Ayurveda reveres this potent fruit due to its bio-enhancing properties, which
help to significantly increase the bioavailability and absorption of other herbs and nutrients it is mixed with thereby helping to potentiate the therapeutic effects and maximizing efficacy.
Holy Basil
Holy Basil, or Tulsi as it is more commonly known in India, is
traditionally revered as one of the most sacred plants in all of India, planted abundantly near every shrine and sacred site. It is considered a Rasayana and
is referred to in many Sanskrit and Ayurvedic texts, while in the west it is recognized as a supportive adaptogen. Tulsi possesses antioxidant properties, supports nervous system, memory and mood health, and some contemporary sources
consider it to possess immune modulating qualities.*
A member of the mint family, the plant is rich in essential oils such as eugenol which gives it is “clove-y” scent, along with some triterpenes, like ursolic acid and flavonoids.Â
