Astragalus
This sweet tasting root has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine for strengthening ones “Wei Chi” or “defensive energy”. Beyond being used as a tonic for immune support, it is also hailed as being an Adaptogenic herb for increasing energy levels. This herb is rich in many different polysaccharides, saponins was used by Taoist monks to invigorate personal vital energy.*
Schisandra
This very sour fruit is known as an adaptogenic all-star used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Schisandra berry is also known as Wu Wei Zi in TCM, which translates as “five flavor berry”. This fruit grows on a hearty deciduous climbing shrub, and is also recognized for its benefits in Siberia. The principal active compounds found in Schisandra are a group of lignins known as schisandrins and
schisandrols.*
Ginger
Another versatile herb or spice that has been relied on for thousands of years in both Ayurveda and TCM. Ginger has a strong pungent and slightly sweet taste and contains many active compounds, namely pungent principals such as Gingerol and Shogal as well as volatile oils like Zingiberine and Zingerone.*
Fo-Ti
This root is also known as He Shou Wu and has been used as a tonic in herb in TCM for centuries. “He Shou Wu” roughly translates as “black haired Mr. He”, inferring its reputation to help preserve health and support longevity. The root is rich in flavonoids, including quercetin, stilbene and other glycosides and phytosterols and traditionally is said to increase the “vital essence”.*
Cassia Bark
Also known as Chinese Cinnamon bark which is a close cousin to “true Cinnamon” and its taste is stronger and more intense family member. This is yet another herb that has not only been used as a culinary spice but known to have a long history of use in TCM and Ayurveda. This energetically warming herb is rich in volatile oils and other compounds including cinnamic acid, cinnamic aldehyde and cinnamyl acetate which makes it a logical addition to any immune supporting formula.*
Codonopsis
Codonopsis, another herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is commonly referred to as “poor man’s ginseng”, indicating the systems reverence for its effects. This very sweet root is loaded with triterpenoid saponins, phytosterols and polysaccharides. Another well-known adaptogenic herb, that is believed in TCM, to work to increase one’s adaptation and resistance to stress.*
Licorice
One of the most commonly and longest used botanicals in Ayurvedic, Chinese, European and Middle Eastern systems. This sweet root is loaded with actives like polysaccharides and triterpenoid saponins. Glycyrrhizin for instance, is uniquely 50 times sweeter than sugar. Considered by several of the herbal systems above to be a synergist for other herbs which enhance the overall effectiveness of other herbs it is blended with.*
Lycium
This berry is also commonly referred to as “Goji” or Chinese Wolfberry and is native to northern China but also grows through much of the Himalayas including Nepal and Tibet. Another restorative tonic herb and super-food that is rich in polysaccharides and carotenoids including zeaxanthin as well as betaine; used abundantly in TCM where it is known as “Gou Qi Zi”.*
