Bitter Orange Peel
The Citrus plant is native to tropical Asia but it is also found in all tropical
and subtropical countries. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the unripe fruit, known as zhi shi, is thought to "regulate the qi" helping to relieve flatulence and abdominal bloating, and to relax the bowels. Bitter orange continues to be widely used for indigestion in many parts of the world. The strongly acidic fruit of the bitter oranges stimulates digestion and relieves flatulence.*
Gentian root
Yellow Gentian is a native of the Alpine pastures of central and southern Europe. Its name is in reference to King Gentius of Illyria (180-167 B.C.), who is said to have discovered its medicinal value. Dioscorides and Pliny described it in detail and recommended it especially for stomach and liver ailments. Gentian has been used for centuries in folk medicine in teas, tonics, and alcoholic aperitifs, served before or after meals to stimulate appetite and aid digestion.
The plant contains the bitter glycoside amarogentin, the most bitter natural substance known. Gentian stimulates the taste receptors on the tongue, causing an increase in the production of saliva and gastric secretion and also supports healthy function of the gallbladder and liver.*
Ginger
Another versatile herb or spice that has been relied on for thousands of years in both Ayurveda and TCM. Ginger has a strong pungent and slightly sweet taste and contains many active compounds, namely pungent principals such as Gingerol and Shogal as well as volatile oils like Zingiberine and Zingerone.*
Fennel Seed
Fennel has a long history of medicinal and culinary uses. Fennel was used by the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Indians, and Chinese. Fennel appears in
the most ancient Greek medical literature in the writings of Hippocrates (5th/4th century BCE) where it is mentioned in over 30 formulas.
Fennel seeds are traditionally used as a digestive aid in various cultures. A 2022 study found that fennel seed extract protected against gastrointestinal inflammation in mice.*
Cardamom seed
Cardamom has been used for thousands of years to help with digestion. Sometimes referred to as the “Queen of Spices,” it belongs to the ginger family, Zingiberaceae and is still one of the most exotic and highly priced spices in the world, after vanilla and saffron. It has been one of the most important herbal spices traded between civilizations from Asia to Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. As a spice it has traditionally been used to relieve digestive and abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting.*
Turmeric
Turmeric rhizome, known by its vibrant yellow-orange hue, has been used as a spice and herb and for over 4,000 years in India and tropical parts of Asia, which make it an integral part of both dietary and medical systems in classical Ayurveda. There have been over 5,000 papers written and published about this amazing plant, Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant and adaptogen. It has been shown to support
digestion, balance the body’s inflammatory response, and support the body in
responding to stress by reducing cortisol and improving mood.
Ajowan Seed
Ajwain originated in the Middle East, possibly in Egypt, before spreading to the Mediterranean region and south-west Asian countries. Ajwain seeds have long been used as a culinary spice and in Indian, Greek, Unani, and Egyptian medicine, and are commonly used in India as a Ayurvedic remedy for digestive issues.
Resent research has shown Ajwain supports healthy digestion and may have gastro-protective effects.*
Centaury
Centaury is a native of Europe and North Africa, originally named after the Centaur
Chiron from Greek mythology known for his skill in medicinal herbs, and is supposed to have cured himself with it from a wound he received from an arrow poisoned with the blood of the hydra.
An aromatic bitter, Century has been used since ancient times as a stomach tonic and to support healthy function of the liver and kidneys. Modern research has shown Century to have gastro-protective effects.*
