The Wellness Within

Andrographis

Known in India and Sri Lanka as the “King of Bitters,” Andrographis has been used in both classical Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 1,000 years to support seasonal immune and respiratory health. Also called “Indian Echinacea,” as well as Kalmegh in India and Chuan Xin Lian in China, it gets its intensely bitter taste from its primary constituents, a group of compounds called andrographolides.*

Neem

Another bitter herb, Neem has been revered in Classical Ayurveda for thousands of years. Clay pots containing Neem have been found in Harappan ruins of the Indus Civilization dating to 2,500 BC. Traditionally called the “village pharmacy” and the “bestower of good health,” the Neem tree has over 300  known constituents. Many parts of the tree have been used traditionally, and we use the leaf, which is naturally rich in antioxidants.*

Young organic ashwagandha plant leaves, a key ingredient in Bold Ashwagandha Plus, an ashwagandha supplement for stress and relaxation support.

Sweet Wormwood

Known as Qing Hao in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sweet Wormwood has been used for over a millennium and cultivated in Southeast Asia for over 2,000 years. This remarkable, aromatic botanical contains over 600 known constituents. Its very bitter taste comes from principles such as artemisinin and arteannuin, along with a small percentage of essential oils, making it a classic bitter in traditional herbal formulas.*

Sage

Revered in Native American traditions, Sage is a hardy perennial shrub also prized by the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans for its culinary and traditional uses. Historically known as the “Salvation Plant,” its name comes from the old Latin word “salvare,” meaning “to save.” The leaf is rich in volatile oils, tannins, and the bitter principle carnosol, giving it an earthy, warm, bitter, and aromatic taste.*

Licorice

Licorice is one of the longest-used and most widely used botanicals in history, valued by Assyrian, Egyptian, Greek, Arab, Chinese, Tibetan, and Indian cultures. This sweet root is rich in polysaccharides and triterpenoid saponins, including glycyrrhizin, which is up to 50 times sweeter than sugar. Many herbal traditions consider Licorice a synergist that enhances the effectiveness of the other herbs it is blended with.*

Holy Basil

Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is revered as one of the most sacred plants in India, planted abundantly near shrines and sacred sites. Considered a Rasayana in Ayurvedic texts, it is recognized in the West as a supportive adaptogen. A member of the mint family, Tulsi is rich in essential oils like eugenol, which gives it a clove-like scent. It offers antioxidant support and supports the nervous system, and the immune system.*

Clove

Cloves are the dried flower buds of an evergreen tree native to Indonesia’s Maluku Islands, the famed Spice Islands, where the clove trade helped shape history. Used for centuries as both a culinary spice and an herb, Clove has a pungent, bitter, and slightly sweet taste. It is one of the strongest antioxidant spices known and is rich in volatile oils, especially eugenol, the main compound in its essential oil.*

Ginger

Ginger rhizome has been used for thousands of years in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine as both a spice and an herb, with a strong pungent and slightly sweet taste. It is known in Ayurveda as the “universal medicine” and is also considered a synergist. Ginger contains active compounds such as gingerols and shogaols. It is rich in antioxidants, and supports a healthy inflammatory and immune response.*
